TX natural gas compressor station blows up
Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News (November 18, 2008)Nov. 18--A natural gas compressor station exploded near Godley about midnight Saturday resulting in a fire that could be seen from Cleburne, Cleburne Assistant Fire Chief Keith Scarbrough said. People also reported hearing the explosion from miles away, Scarbrough said.
The facility is owned by Crosstex Pipeline and serves as an entry point for an EOG Resources site. The incident occurred near Farm-to-Market Road 4 and County Road 1228. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, Scarbrough said.
Firefighters from Cleburne, Bono and Godley responded. Johnson County Sheriff's Office deputies secured the area and temporarily evacuated several nearby residences. One employee was on site at the time of the explosion although no injuries were reported, Scarbrough said.
A second compressor station, owned by Chesapeake Energy, sits right next door to the first facility, Scarbrough said. The fire, which burned several hours, completely destroyed the two compressors, Scarbrough said. Firefighters estimate damages to be more than $2 million.
A 24 inch pipeline had to be shut in and the residual gas allowed to burn before firefighters advanced to extinguish the remaining fire.
